These stoves were initially constructed of natural terra-cotta clay that was dried and wood-fired in kilns. Chimineas made of clay are more rustic in appearance and were not glazed to protect their surface. Modern manufacturers make chimineas out of metals like aluminum, cast iron and brass. These materials provide better durability and resistance to weather which addresses one of the main limitations of the clay design.
The unique design of the chiminea was inspired by a potbellied bottom that rises up to create an elongated fireplace. This design is ideal for containing a fire while moving smoke upwards. This reduces the intake of air and increases heat retention.

Traditional chimineas are handcrafted by local artisans using moist clay that is taken directly from the earth. The raw material was molded into its final shape before being dried by kiln. The process of making the clay chimenea was labor-intensive, especially for huge ones. Typically the potters would roll long snakes of clay into a circular shape and then smooth the clay together and create the chiminea's bowl as well as neck. The rim of the clay was usually decorated with carvings or patterns.
A modern chiminea is generally constructed from metal, such as cast iron or aluminum. The introduction of chimineas made of Metal chimineas was a significant evolutionary step since they can withstand high temperatures and moisture without cracking. This allowed chimineas be used in a broad range of climates.
While there are several companies that manufacture clay and terracotta-based chimineas most chimineas now are made from metal. The advantages of using a metal chiminea include its ability to withstand higher temperatures and the fact that it is able to be cleaned more easily. These factors have made chimineas from metal more popular than clay counterparts.
Whatever kind of chiminea you pick it is essential to place it in the proper place. It should be placed in a level area and away from any fire-prone objects like grass, trees or other structures. The chiminea should also be placed on a brick, concrete or stone patio, and never on a wooden deck. It's a good idea also to put 50mm of sand, or Gardeco Lava Stones under the chiminea. This will shield it from direct heat.

Chimineas are currently available in a wide range of materials that include cast iron, terracotta and even aluminum. Terracotta chimineas are by far the most common choice, offering the traditional Mexican appearance. However, they are prone to cracking under pressure, and should only be used on a flat, fire-safe surface. Cast iron and aluminum chimineas have a lower risk of damage and are still stylish and sturdy.
To ensure that the chiminea will last as long as you can, place it in a location that is well-ventilated and shielded from wind and rain. It should be kept away from any walls or structures that could catch fire as well as patio roofs or eaves that could be damaged due to the sudden change in temperature that occurs when the chiminea is extinguished. In order to prevent the chiminea from smoking too much, it's advised to keep the leaves away and only well-seasoned, kiln-dried logs are burned. It is essential to clean the chiminea frequently with a wirebrush, as this will avoid deposits that can burn and blacken. Shielding the chiminea from winds will also help reduce the amount of smoke that it emits as it burns.
Maintenance
Like any other fire pit with chiminea apparatus the proper maintenance is crucial to ensure the longevity of your chiminea terracotta. This will extend its lifespan and ensure it is operating safely. Chimineas are fragile and should be kept in a protected area where they can be properly cared for. Although a chiminea made of clay may seem sturdy enough, it is still vulnerable to cracks and breakage from various sources. This is why it's crucial to examine your chiminea frequently for signs of wear and tear, and to follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding how often it should be fired.
The first step to ensure that your mexican-chiminea stays looking the best is to scrub it thoroughly using a mild detergent solution. This will remove any built-up dirt and grime that could cause discoloration and corrosion. To remove loose rust particles, make use of a wire brush. It is recommended that gloves and goggles are worn to protect yourself. After scrubbing your chiminea clean, rinse it and let it dry completely. This will prevent any water from causing corrosion and can significantly extend the life of your chiminea.
After your steel chiminea has been cleaned and dried, it should be lightly sanded with fine grit sandpaper. This will smooth the surface and eliminate any rough spots that could catch on to embers when you build a fire. The sanding can also help to make the surface more even and attractive. The sanding process can be followed with several coats of grill or stove paint to enhance the appearance and safeguard your chiminea from rust.
Keep your chiminea away from direct sunlight and wind, as this can cause the paint to peel off and fade. You can fix the issue using water-based emulsions or paints or masonry spray. It is also essential to only add a few pieces of wood at a time and make small fires in your chiminea in order to "break it in" and prevent overheating.
